Dutchess County Fair

For six days each August, the bucolic Dutchess County Fairgrounds on Route 9 in Rhinebeck NY plays host to nearly half a million patrons. The second largest county fair in New York State is the showplace for agriculture in Dutchess County. Over 160 acres of finely manicured gardens and grass create the beautiful setting for thousands of farm animals, agricultural exhibits and horticultural displays.

The Dutchess County Fairgrounds becomes an entertainment destination where big name talent can be enjoyed, "thrill a minute" excitement can be experienced at one of the finest carnivals in the entire country, free shows and attractions can be viewed almost constantly from the time you arrive to the time you leave. The tradition of excellence that has been the Dutchess County Fair for over 160 years offers something for everyone and creates memorable moments that will be cherished for a lifetime.

The third week in August is as just as described experience a classic.Every year Harvey and I save our caloric over load for the 4H Milkshakes-vanilla, chocolate or strawberry and the John's French Fries. We wait patiently on the long line for the shake deciding which flavor milkshake we will split. Somehow we each always get our own shake. The fries come in a large dog size dog dish, yes the extra large order. Now you can begin to understand why we write so much about the Rhinebeck High School track. Our Friend's Adoption Communique

Dear Family, Friends and Colleagues,

As some of you may know, we are hoping to start a family through the adoption of a baby, for which we have started an extensive search to locate a child. We need to ask as many of you as possible to help spread the word. Like an old-fashioned barn raising, the more people involved in the process, the greater the chances are for us to meet a pregnant woman who is considering adoption as a choice for her child.

We are sending the attached letter in hopes that you may know an expectant woman who is making an adoption plan for her baby. Or, perhaps, you know someone in your community who might know an expectant woman or would be willing to keep our letter on file (like your doctor or hairdresser). Finally, there may be a neighborhood bulletin board (local college, food co-op, YMCA, etc.) where you are allowed to post it. Strange as this process may seem to many of you, there are amazing and heart-warming stories of adoption connections made this way.

Rhinebeck Farmer's Market

The 2009 Rhinebeck Farmer's Market is open Sundays between at 10 am and closing at 2 pm. Harvey and I went to the Farmers Market on Opening Day. We saw many of our old friends and vendors. One of the new vendors this year is Ronnybrook Farm Dairy. Their chocolate low fat milk is not only delicious, but nutritious too; honestly speaking as a nutritionist. Also new this year is the Rhinebeck Farmers Market Blog. In honor of Mothers Day, I selected a planting of Pastel Yarrow which is now in the ground. Good time was enjoyed by all except for Sophie. Unfortunately dogs are not allowed even if they are on a leash; this 2008/2009 decision, I hope will be revisited in the near future. The Rhinebeck Farmer's Market is located in the Rhinebeck Municipal Parking lot.

Rhinebeck Garden Club

Now that Spring is around the corner, its time to start thinking about our gardens again. Rhinebeck is very fortunate to have an active Garden Club that meets monthly either at the Town Hall or the Village Hall and provides a venue for horticultural education and awareness through Master Gardener presentations in a friendly, social atmosphere. The club meetings (delete generally open to all...) are usually on the 4th Wednesday of the month except for the December meeting and field trips, which are scheduled at different times. There are no meetings in July, August and January. The meetings start at 10AM with a special program each month, followed by refreshments, horticultural discussion/presentation, and the business meeting. The Growing Older in Rhinebeck Calendar lists the specific Garden Club meetings. Guests are most welcome!

MAY 27th MEETING: Come. Learn from and enjoy Sondra Tillou's power point presentation, "Historic Irises"at 10:00 in the VILLAGE HALL.
